MEDIA PRODUCTS

Evaluating different media products:

Media product:

Print and Electronic Publishing, including newspapers, comics, magazines, etc

Magazine: https://schonmagazine.com/reflections/

Advantages:

This media product would be good to use because the reflections on those pictures reveal scars from the past, hold time in the present, and give us a window to the future.

Disadvantages:

This media product would not be suitable for my target audience because of the cost, printing, designing, and distributing print ads can be expensive, making it difficult for small businesses or startups to afford. Printed ads can only reach a limited audience compared to digital ads, which can reach a much larger and more diverse audience.

Media product:

Moving Image, including Television, Film and Video

Advantages:

This media product would be good to use because learning feels relevant to young people's experiences and these moving images or animations create interest and distract from the stationary surroundings, with many viewers watching on loop when they find the content particularly eye catching.

Disadvantages:

This media product would not be suitable for my target audience because

Media product:

Audio, including commercial, network, public broadcasting, community, etc

Advantages:

This media product would be good to use because audio evokes strong feelings and emotions. The right sound(such as music) will motivate your audience and evoke emotions, such as compassion. And good audio ensures you convey your message as clearly as possible.

Disadvantages:

This media product would not be suitable for my target audience because

Media product:

Web-based technologies/New Media, including websites, apps, and gaming etc

Website: https://www.icelandaurora.com/photo-tutorials/reflections-in-landscape-photography

Advantages:

This media product would be good to use because it can help audience navigate the site easily. The goal of anyone visiting your website is to quickly find the information that they are looking for.

Disadvantages:

This media product would not be suitable for my target audience because

Media product:

Art: paintings, sculptures, and drawings.

Painting:https://www.saatchiart.com/art/Painting-Mountains-Reflection/1234247/8370135/view

Advantages:

This media product would be good to use because: it shows the beauty of nature by using reflection and by drawing it.

Disadvantages:

This media product would not be suitable for my target audience because

In the picture that I took, I can see a reflection on the clear glass.

I can also see a reflection of the frames in the clear glass.

There is a reflection in a mirror as well and I took a few pictures of the mirror in different angles to show different reflections in a mirror.

Documentaries

Codes and conventions

What is a documentary?

-A documentary film or documentary is a non-fictional motion picture intended to "document reality, primarily for instruction, education or maintaining a historical record".

List some documentary films you know

-American Nightmare, Man with a Movie Camera, The Thin Blue Line, Night and Fog.

Define the different sub-genres and give examples of these films

Docudrama - a genre of television and film, which features dramatized reenactments of actual events. It is described as a hybrid of documentary and drama and "a fact-based representation of real event".

Examples: United 93(2006), Deepwater Horizon(2016)

Historical - fiction film showing past events or set within a historical period.

Examples: Napoleon, Oppenheimer, All Quiet On The Western Front

Biographic/Autobiographic - a biography is the life story of an individual, written by someone else. An autobiography is the story of a person's life, written by that person.

Examples: Harriet(2019), Apollo 13(1995)

Nature/Science - a natural history film or wildlife is a documentary film about animals, plants, or other non-human living creatures. Science is a genre of speculative fiction, which typically deals with imaginative and futuristic concepts such as advanced science and technology, space exploration, time travel, and parallel universes.

Examples:

Ethnographic - is a non-fiction film, often similar to a documentary film, historically shot by Western filmmakers and dealing with non-Western people, and sometimes associated with anthropology.

Examples:

Travel - a documentary film, television program, or online series that describes travel in general or tourist attractions without recommending particular package deals or tour operators.

Examples: Bodies,

Advocacy/Crime - advocacy documentaries seek public support for or recommend a particular cause or policy. Crime is a film genre inspired by and analogous to the crime fiction literary genre. Films of this genre generally involve various aspects of crime and its detection.

Examples: The Public Enemy(1931), Donnie Brasco(1997)

Rockumentary - a documentary about rock music and musicians. Often an extended live performance/concert.

Examples:

Sport - sports documentaries are about race, gender, media, celebrity, politics and identity

Examples: Senna(2010), Hoop Dreams(1994), The Last Dance, Hitting the Apex(2015), Free Solo(2018), Team Foxcatcher(2016).

What is your favorite documentary film and why?

-

Analyse the film for its sub-genres and the use of documentary conventions.

-

Documentary review - Homework

Watch March of the Penguins:

What is the documentary sub-genre for this documentary?
-Nature, wildlife

What conventions of a documentary does it use and why?
-

What documentary modes are used and why? Give evidence that includes screenshots to confirm your answer(s).
-Expository Mode is used. The Expository Mode of Documentary addresses the viewer directly and does this through the use of titles and voice-overs to add a perspective or argument to what is shown in the film.

Give your opinion on the documentary. How did it make you feel? Has it changed your opinions? Is there a specific scene that stood out?

-The film March of the Penguins shows their life and this documentary shows the beauty and struggle of emperor penguins as they embark on yet another cycle of migration and mating. The nature is shown throughout the movie, through narration and scenes depicting how these penguins survive the harsh climate of Antarctica.
-A specific scene that stood out and which is the worst part, in my opinion, is to see that a seal can eat a penguin, which is very shocking, very sudden but fascinating.

Vox Pop - Primary Research

1 What is the Latin term for Vox Pops?

” Sherman was tweaking the maxim vox populi, vox Dei, a Latin phrase that translates as “The voice of the people [is] the voice of God” and that is used by many people (except Sherman, clearly) to mean “the people are always right.”

2 What is the definition of a ‘Vox Pop’?

The phrase itself comes from Latin and it translates to mean 'voice of the people'. Today, a vox pop is a short video made up of clips taken from interviews with members of the public.

Packages for Radio or TV?

1 How might you use Vox Pops as part of a bigger media product?

8Vox Pop can also be used for on-going or post project reviewers. Campaign Testing and Product Testing Films are perfect examples.

y

2 In journalism, how long does a Vox Pop ‘report’ normally last?

Vox Pops are usually short audio or video collages of multiple voices and are under two minutes long. Interview subjects can be random people on the street, around the school, or even within a classroom. The more interviews, the better the vox pop. There should be at least 10 distinct voices in a Vox Pop.

3 List two pros and two cons in terms of Vox Pops (see Vox Pops slide show)

Pros: makes programs more lively, creates a close connection with the listener, reflects public opinion.

Cons: the people being interviewed may be shy about talking into a microphone, and vox pop cannot stand alone – it always has to be connected to another part of the program.

Secondary Research

Pick 2 of the documentary makers

1. Michael Moore

Who are they? What genre of Documentary do they make? What conventions do they use? What awards have they won? What are their most famous work/s?

-Michael Moore (born April 23, 1954,  Flint, Michigan, U.S.) American filmmaker, author, and political activist, who was best known for a series of documentaries - that addressed major political and social issues in the United States.

-His work is highly committed - overtly polemical in taking up a clear point of view, what might be called agit-prop documentary.

-Awards that Michael Moore won are:

Oscar for ‘Bowling for Columbine’ (2002), 8 Audience Awards, Peace Film Award – Honorable Mention for ‘Roger and Me’, Bodil Award for Best American Film for ‘Bowling for Columbine’, FIPRESCI Prize, 55th Anniversary Prize, and Palme d’Or award at Cannes, César award for the best foreign film for ‘Bowling for Columbine’, People’s Choice Award for best documentary film, Emmy for Outstanding Informational Series for: “TV Nation” (1994), Filmmaker award and tribute award at Gotham awards.

-Now considered one of the greatest documentaries ever made, Moore's Bowling for Columbine - released in 2002 - takes the high school massacre and considers the factors that led to the tragedy, examining American gun laws and the culture of violence that pervades American society. On its release, it was the highest-grossing documentary ever to have had a mainstream release, bringing in an enormous $58 million off the back of a small $4 million outlay.

Identify one of their films you would like to watch and say why you are interested in it.

I would like to watch Sicko (2007), because it's one of Moore's best-known and most hard-hitting documentaries, Sicko (2007) looks into the glaring issues within American healthcare and doesn't hold back in criticising big pharma.

2. Sarah Polley

Who are they? What genre of Documentary do they make? What conventions do they use? What awards have they won? What are their most famous work/s?

-Sarah Polley (born January 8, 1979) is a Canadian filmmaker, writer, political activist and retired actress.

-Stories We Tell is a 2012 Canadian documentary film written and directed by Sarah Polley and produced by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). The film explores her family's secrets—including one intimately related to Polley's own identity.

-

-Sarah Polley, the filmmaker behind MGM's Women Talking, won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 2023 Academy Awards. “I just want to thank the Academy for not being mortally offended by the words 'women' and 'talking' being so close together like that,” Polley said in her acceptance speech.

-Sarah Polley is an acclaimed director and screenwriter and one of Canada's most talented and well-known actors. Her work as a child actor in such TV series as CBC's Road to Avonlea (1990–96) and in such films as Atom Egoyan's Exotica (1994) and The Sweet Hereafter (1997) established her as a rising star.

Halcyon Gallery

This is a gallery that I went to and took nice pictures of reflections. And I also going to use them for my leaflet.

I can see a lot of frames with pictures of the same person.

I really like the repetition of the same picture but I can see that each of them is in a different colour, which makes it more interesting.

I really like the design of the wall and the really bright pictures in the frames.

There are lots of reflected lights on the wall and I really like the screens of the butterflies which are shown in the picture.

In this picture, I can see a few reflections which are lights on the ceiling and on the frame and I can also see the reflected frame on the glass in the background, it makes it more interesting because I can't see the actual frame and it's just reflected.

And this is another picture where I can see reflected frames in the clear glass but I can't see the actual frame.

I can see a really clear reflection of stairs and handrails.

The bright red colour really attracts our attention and I can see a clear reflection of the pictures of the cans in the clear glass.

About Reflections

What are reflection photographs?

Reflection photos refer to any shot that uses a reflective surface, no matter what type of photography genre. Landscape photography, with a mountain duplicated in the still water of a lake, is reflection photography. An image of a city captured on the shiny surface of a skyscraper is a reflection shot, as is that same city skyline captured in a puddle on a footpath. Even a self-portrait snapped in a shop window is a type of reflective photography.

“Reflection photography really is about the ability to look at an image differently,” photographer Patrick Koetzle says. “Seeing a reflection in the water appeals to me. It pulls me in. It makes me see this beautiful image twice.”

Look at the world differently to find amazing reflections.

Beautiful reflections can exist anywhere, but you must train your eyes and be aware of your surroundings to find reflective surfaces to use in your shots. “Many people will walk by a river, a lake, or a puddle and they won’t necessarily see the reflection,” Koetzle explains.

You won’t be able to move some reflective surfaces, like lakes, puddles, or windows, so you’ll have to move around to find the right angles.

“With any reflection, you’ll want to mess around with height,” photographer Tyler Grobmeier says. “You may have to get low to the ground if you want to get more of the subject reflected. If there’s a puddle on the street, crouch down to the level of the street.”

Photographer Sebastian Magnani Captured The Beauty Of Nature In Mirror Reflections

Biography

Sebastian Magnani is a Switzerland-based photographer known for his intimate portraits masterfully utilizing light and color to create emotional scenes.

Sebastian Magnani Talks about this series: Reflections is a present undertaking, during which I photograph a spherical mirror in numerous locations. It’s all about the great thing about mirrored mild. It’s like a universe, a small planet, with some risks in the distinction of buildings, colors, moods, and numerous lightnings, the fascination of interaction like nature and civilization, or the gravitation between life and death, such as in the rose blossoms, in which the tree in the mirror full of life and color radiates, on the floor, the sheet but already on is wilting. And finally, a significant thing, the key to self-development, is self-reflection, which is always crucial to progress. Compare new with the old, remove again, be fond of discovery, then go back to the origins, an interplay that keeps us moving, we can feel the life.

Magazine analysis

https://www.unsell.design/free-indesign/free-indesign-green-modern-fashion-magazine-layout-template/

I think that this magazine is for selling clothes. I really like the minimalist style, the pictures are all in different sizes and some of them are in frames which makes them look more interesting. It is easy to understand what they wanted to say by its magazine and because it looks simple to others. It is minimalistic because the colours are not bright and there are not that many of them. And I really like how one colour covers another colour on top.

https://www.behance.net/gallery/97155335/BLING-Magazine-Magazine-Design?tracking_source=search_projects%7Cmagazine+layout&l=1

This magazine is more about music and about American rapper, 21 Savage. In this magazine it says about his childhood and how he turned to rapping. I really like the big text in first page and its also very bright pink.

Research on Poster

I really like the design with the hand and it shows that it is something that is related to media and art.

The colours in this poster are really interesting and they really match to each other. But one thing that I don't like in that on the right-hand side I can't really see the white text on the very light background and I would change the colour of the text.

Research on Invitation

I really like the idea with different colour letters and the size of the text as well, and it makes me really interested in reading this invitation.
